The Forest Gate

The Moonsea ride travels south here into the forest of Cormanthor, through a sort of arch made by two great trees that lean together. A faint spiraling writing has been etched into their trunks. A gloomy tunnel stretches south into the forest, while more of the Ride is to the north.

Path into Cormanthor

As the path continues, the light from the forest gate is left far behind. The path is narrow and winds in and out among the trunks of huge trees to the south, east and west, trees which lean down as if to listen to the deep silence of the woods.

Path into Cormanthor

Silence draws in upon the woods here. Birds cease to sing, and there are no deer, nor even any rabbits in sight. Only the great overhanging boughs of the ancient trees are here, and the only sound the faint rustle of their branches. The path runs deep into the woods to the south and east.

Forgotten Forest

Deep in this thick forest, an occasional beam of sun stabs thin and bright through an opening in the leaves above. Places the light has struck are marked by small yellow flowers known as sunbursts. It's hard to be sure but the barely existent path appears to continue west.

Forgotten Path

The borders of this rough, forgotten path can barely be seen through the thick clumps of ferns and numerous saplings that grow here. It is difficult to keep one's sense of direction but it seems the trail leads south in a looping fashion through a grove of beech trees.

Beech Grove

The narrow path cuts east through this grove of enormous beech trees, trees whose thick leafy branches form a dark roof overhead faintly dappled by sunlight. In the center of the grove, several sawn rings of felled trees lie in a great circle around a large flat stone. The stone bears faint writing which spirals around its edge.

Forgotten Forest

This thick section of the ancient forest looks like it has not been entered for hundreds of years. The path disappears in a tangle of undergrowth and fallen trees covered by large patches of green moss. To the west lies a secluded grove of stately beech trees.

Path into Cormanthor

The twisting path turns deeper into the dark woods of Cormanthor. From the brush lining the sides of the path come queer noises... grunts, growls and scuffling of things hurrying through the undergrowth. Now and then a glimpse can be seen of small creatures scuttling across the trail to hide in the cover of the forest.

Deep in Cormathor Forest

The heavy, sheltering boughs of huge beech and oak trees cast lengthening shadows over the saplings, ferns and roses which fill the gaps between the great trees which rise far into the sky. All but forgotten, the well hidden forest trail twists northward into the green-tinged gloom. A pure white stone building sits off in the west.

Heart of Cormanthor Forest

Gigantic hardwood trees tower overhead, nearly blocking the sun and sky totally from view. Their thick, gnarled roots erupt along the path, threatening to entangle the ankles of unwary travelers. Some childish markings have been left on the redwood here. The unsteady trail leads south, further into forest shadows, and twists eastwards down a wooden slope.

Heart of Cormanthor Forest

Majestic oak and beech trees stretch skywards, their branches crowning a hundred feet or more overhead. Sunlight dapples through the gaps made as the branches sway slowly, striking the young saplings lining the rough edges of the path. It will take many years before they grow to the height of the ancient hardwood grove which grows to the north and west of here.

Deep in Cormanthor Forest

The rich scent of black earth dominates this area. The scent comes from the base of an enormous oak tree, where, between its twisting roots, a large hole has been quickly dug. Lying amid the pile of fresh-turned earth and decomposing leaves is a broken wooden box that looks hundreds of years old. Someone was here, and recently too, to claim the contents. Perhaps it was a long forgotten elvish treasure trove...

Cormanthor Greenwood

The rough and narrow path winds in and out of the thick brush that grows in the spaces between the great trunks of the ancient hardwoods. At one point the path dips into a hollow underneath a huge fallen tree, now rotting and covered in a thick carpet of moss and bright yellow fungus. Passing through the darkness under the log, several small pairs of eyes gleam from the darkness.. hopefully they belong to small furry woodland creatures who do not like attacking passing travellers. The trail continues east and also runs toward the south.

Cormanthor Greenwood

Wending its way from the east through the forest, the narrow path twists north and turns west around the massive trunks of the oak and beech trees which grow here. The trunks are covered in thick green moss and the stray vine of ivy which has twined down from the branches above. Some trunks bear scratches and deep gouges, such marks that could be made by elven spears and swords. If this was the scene of an ancient elvish battle, this is all that remains to tell the tale.

The Moonsea Ride

This section of the Moonsea ride, one of the area's main roads, runs south to the vast ancient forest of Cormanthor. Long ago this region was held by the elves, and it is rumoured their presence still remains in the deep heart of the woods.

Farsea Marsh

This is the northwestern edge of a thick swamp. The marsh is knee-deep to a half-giant. The air is thick with gnats and mosquitoes, and all around is the scent of stagnation and death.

Farsea Marsh

Near the northern edge of a thick swamp, the ground here slopes downward to the west and south, where the muck grows deeper. To the east, a little light filters into the swamp, but the light only serves to create a few spooky shadows.

Farsea Marsh

This is the extreme northern edge of the Farsea Marsh. Here the poisonous marsh doesn't seem all that bad, but it is obviously deeper and darker further in. To the north lies a way out of the swamp. Maybe.

Farsea Marsh

This is the northern edge of a vast swamp. The land has suddenly gone very quiet. An eerie silence has fallen upon the marsh. What could it mean?

Farsea Marsh

The northeastern edge of the Farsea Marsh is little different from the rest. The growth thins a bit, and the muck is only enough to cover a person's boots. The atmosphere of the place, though, remains the same. Creatures dart from tree to tree, waiting for unwary adventurers to venture deeper into their domain.

Farsea Marsh

This is the western edge of the marsh. The ground appears to be a bit drier to the south, but the brackish water gets deeper towards the north and east. There are many strange trees here, and they seem to be in pain.

Farsea Marsh

Here, deep within the Farsea Marsh, it is difficult to see in any direction. The foul water is fairly deep here, and the marsh seems to be calling out for help. The vegetation is dark and rough, and appears to be dead or dying.

Farsea Marsh

Here, deep within the thick swamp, the buzz of the mosquitoes is so loud that a mighty roar might not be heard. The very top of a ruined tower is visible sticking up out of the waters of the swamp. It appears that the top of the tower might provide a better view of the marsh.

Farsea Marsh

One of the great trees of the marsh has fallen here. As big around as a half-giant's chest, the massive log blocks passage to the south. Climbing on top of it is quite impossible due to the slime covering it. From far to the southeast comes the growl of something on the hunt.

Farsea Marsh

Here a path wandering from the east slowly winds its way into the Farsea Marsh. It is hot and humid here, and the air is thick with mosquitoes. Birds are singing off to the east, but from within the marsh itself there are only growls of predators.

Farsea Marsh

The bald cypress trees here on the western edge of the marsh seem to be dying or in pain. The water is about a foot deep, and is black and brackish.

Farsea Marsh

The muck in this part of the marsh is the deepest yet. In fact, it appears to be deep enough to dive into and to explore further.

Farsea Marsh

This appears to be the deepest part of the marsh. Very little light penetrates through the gloom. The only sounds are the insects, and an occasional mysterious growl.

Farsea Marsh

The growth seems to be at its thickest here. The twisted, gnarled limbs of the trees reach out like skeletal hands. Roots reach up to snag the feet of the inattentive. No sunlight reaches this part of the marsh. One of the great trees of the marsh has fallen near here, blocking the passage to the north. The smell is awful and seems to be even worse to the south.

Farsea Marsh

Near the eastern edge of the Farsea Marsh ground is wet and sticky with mud. The vegetation is dead or dying. Toward the east one can enter the tall, mountainous terrain of the Storm Horns. All other directions lead to more marsh-like territory.

Farsea Marsh

This is the southern edge of the marsh. The air is thick and oppressive. The ground is wet with black, brackish water. The trees, which are bald cypress, are twisted and gnarled.

Farsea Marsh

This is the southern edge of the great marsh. The ground is covered by brackish water, about a foot deep. All around are large, misshapened trees that appear to have once been mighty bald cypress trees.

Farsea Marsh

The smell here is the worst of any part of the marsh. One look, and the reason quickly becomes obvious. Although all parts of the marsh are filled with the dead and the dying, death is most abundant here. Corpses float by in the muck, too blackened by disease for even the carrion birds to eat. There is no sound here, as though nothing has survived the pestilence.

Farsea Marsh

This is the southeastern corner of the Farsea Marsh. The thick growth of the swamp stretches out to the north and west. Far to the north, a bird of prey screeches loudly. To the west, the smell of death is strong.

Keep Entrance

A long narrow tubular hallway stretches west to the keep center. This hallway is crafted out of pure marble which is interlaced with bright red rose petals. The white marble and red petals combine to create an intense blinding effect. A sturdy wooden door is back in the east.

Keep of the Holy Cloth and Rose

This center room of the keep is extraordinarily large. A beautifully decorated crimson and cream banner hangs from the ceiling, while a bright red carpet in the shape of a rose runs through the center of the room. A set of winding stairs runs off center the middle of the room and upward. The walls of the room are the same bright white marble, interlaced with red rose petals, and naturally bright. This room is lite, but several burning torches which line the circular room. A hollow sound echoes beneath your feet. Several elegant crimson chairs line the walls of the room, while a huge round table sits at its center. The table has spread over it many maps and drawings.

Split in the Path

The trail splits into a Y continuing to the north and further on to the west. The luminous tree seems to watch the forest's every move, swaying to and fro as the wind shrieks. Small scraping noises can be heard, not wholly unlike the sounds of scales scraping across a rock's surface.

Redwood Grove

Here the redwoods gather in what appears to be a semi-circle. The trail leads directly into the center, where bright beams of light descend upon the earthen floor. A well worn trail extends further to the west.

Redwood Grove

The red glow that abounded to the east seems to abate to the west, giving rise to complete darkness. The slithering sounds of snakes can be heard as the trail slinks further into the Forest of Wyrms.

Disappearing Grove

The redwood trees thin out and begin to give way to a thick layer of underbrush. Slender beams of light break through the canopy illuminating the thorn laden rose bushes, blocking any path to the east and west. As a raven calls from above, a gentle breeze moves the branches to reveal the tops of some distant spires.

Deeper into the Forest of Wyrms

Continuing deeper into the forest the earthen ground gives way to a more rocky terrain. Up above a raven caws mercilessly at all intruders. Small insects and mammals scurry about in great anticipation.

Foreboding Trail

The trail turns sharply to the south. The humidity in this section of the forest is quite pungent...almost palpable. Moss and lichen covers the trees giving off an eerie green glow. Small arachnids scurry across the trail, perhaps to make way for something larger.

Dank Trail

To the south the path lies covered with little more than an inch of swamp water. Here the elms that once stood tall now slump from their large intake of water. The putrid smell comes perhaps from their gradual decay.

Dank Trail

Again the path splits, flowing to the east and again on to the south. To the south the water seems to abate giving rise to a small opening in the forest. A quick glance to the east provides no further information, as the light has all but vanished.

An Opening in the Path

Although the light seems to blind the eyes the trail appears to have opened up. The luminous trees have receded their protective canopy and light abounds. Off to the west a different trail begins. To the south, the forest ends abruptly, giving way to vast plains.

Disappearing Trail

Complete darkness abounds in this section of the forest. It is nearly impossible to distinguish from whence the strange slithering sounds originate. The thick underbrush makes penetration further into the forest nearly impossible. The best bet seems to be to the north.

Off the Beaten Path

The lightly traveled path continues on to the west and back again to the east. The path to the south leads into complete darkness. The slithering sounds seem to be coming most intensely from the darkness to the south. Several ravens caw teasingly at a night owl up above while small insects and rodents hustle into the brush to prevent becoming a tasty morsel for the hungering birds above.

Slipper Gulch

The water in the tiny gulch appears to be knee-deep. Tiny glints of gold and silver can be seen as small goldfish writhe and twist in the cool waters below. Occasionally the splash of a frog jumping in from the bank breaks the monotonous silence.

Rocky Floor

A sharp descent to the north leads directly into a gulch. A pool has collected below and although the darkness prevents the naked eye from seeing the splashes would indicate some type of life in the gulch. The moss covered rocks make attaining a good footing nearly impossible.

A Well Worn Path

The trail here appears quite worn. The tall grass has been crushed by what appears to be repeated trampling. The tall trees that once grew abundantly in the heart of the forest are quite rare on this western edge. A quick survey of the forest shows a multitude of tiny snakes slithering to and fro upon the various terrain.

Off the Beaten Path

The path continues to the north and back again to the east. The brush on the trail here seems quite healthy, indicating the lack of use on the southern parts of the trail. The large pine trees that once towered over the forest floor are all but gone now. A thick underbrush seems to be more prominently featured.

Approaching the Mist

The end of the trail seems to lead out of the Forest of Wyrms. The deep mist that surrounds this area scatters the light in every direction, creating a rainbow effect. A trail extends to the west, deep into the veil of fog.

Narrow Mountain Stream

This narrow mountain stream begins as barely a trickle from the mountain lake to the east, but grows in size as it flows westward. It rushes along over the small smooth stones that line the stream-bed, creating tiny streaks of foam. The distinct hushed roar of a waterfall can be faintly heard from the west.

Above a Small Waterfall

The current of the stream has quickened dramatically as it flows from the east. Following the stream-bed, the waters rush headlong over the edge of a precipice, creating a breathtaking waterfall. The muffled roar of the falling water fills the air, rising into the cloud of spray that rises from below.

Below a Small Waterfall

As the water cascades down from above, curls of foam and white froth float on the churning surface of the stream. A powerful undertow has been created in this spot, it would be best not to swim here. The current resumes its flow to the west, where the way looks to be choppy and full of rocks.

Into the Rapids

The stream rushes along into this area full of rocks which jut up from the stream-bed. Streaks of foam dot the surface of the water as the force of the current hits each rock. The stream-bed here seems to be a series of long, shallow shelves clustered with rocks, for the stream has taken on somewhat of a stairway effect as its waters flow swiftly by to the west.

Jagged Rocks

Large jagged rocks rise without warning out of the water of the stream. Anyone trying to navigate their way with a boat here is in for a very unpleasant surprise, for the rocks are surely sharp enough to pierce the bottom of any craft. In spite of the obstacle, the current continues to run swiftly to the west. A series of shallow rapids rise up behind.

On a Small River

The flow of the river has calmed and deepened here and the bottom of the riverbed can no longer be seen with ease, instead it has vanished into the murky depths. As it flows to the east, the current once again seems to slowly pick up speed.

Along a Small River

The river travels westward, the current becoming ever stronger. The way to the west is almost obscured by a rising cloud of spray, and the distinct sound of rushing water drifts in from this direction. Surely another section of rapids must lie ahead. To the east the river appears to flow more tranquilly.

Into More Rapids

This steep descent in the river-bed takes the strong current over a series of sharp, projecting rocks. Froth rises angrily from the bases of these stones and is swept away like flotsam to the west. The river flows swiftly down, emptying its waters into the confines of a large pool.

A Large Pool

After the fury of the rapids, this large, deep pool is a restful place indeed. The current flows in large, lazy circles, sporting tufts of white foam like tiny caps. The waters themselves are of a vivid deep blue which is striking when not in swift, fluid motion. A series of rapids rises up behind, while the river flows onward to the west.

Along a Shallow River

As the river's flow departs the relative stillness of the large pool, it begins to gather speed and strength once more, running westward. Bits of the riverbank have been eroded away by the current, baring shelves of white-gray mountain rock. A cloud of white mist seems to rise from the west, where the sound of running water becomes much louder.

Above a Small Waterfall

Fine white spray hangs heavy in the air above the edge of a waterfall flowing down from this river. The water rushes along, carrying anything caught in its path that cannot fight the pull of its powerful current. Over time the flow has polished the surfaces of several large rocks to a sleek smoothness that contrasts with the jaggedness of the mountain beyond the riverbanks. East of here lies the river.

Bellow a Small Waterfall

Protruding rocks along the length of the waterfall catch and divert the flow of the water, fashioning a stunning cascade effect of many tiny rivulets of water and foam. The water swirls and flows in circular motion before the current claims it once again and travels westward.

Across a Narrow Ledge

The trail follows a narrow ledge that runs along the side of this mountain. It is rough and uneven making travel along it both difficult and dangerous. It descends rapidly from here and also runs east up a more gentle slope.

A Split in the Trail

The path leads upwards from here following a narrow ledge and also leads down the mountain at a very steep grade. To the east from here is a tiny path that cuts off from this trail. It heads around a large boulder, then disappears from sight.

Along a Tiny Trail

This tiny trail leading from the main path to the west goes almost unnoticed. It is well hidden by two large, jagged outcroppings of rock, but the trail can be reached by carefully negotiating under a rocky overhang. The trail is extremely narrow, enclosed by two steep rock faces which rise to meet one another at their apexes. Chunks of stone and loose rubble litter the trail, as it descends down into the foothills.

The Foothills

The rocky path twists and turns as it leads up into the foothills of the Thunder Peaks. It passes a large mound of rocks then becomes quite a bit steeper as it climbs up into the mountains.

On a Steep Mountain Trail

The path achieves an even steeper slant as it runs up and down the side of this mountain. Travel is difficult here as gravity and strong winds fight against every step forward, while loose bits of rock tumble from above and bounce down the incline.

A Quiet Valley

This low valley is nestled between two rugged mountains which rise up and to the east. The mountainsides which slope into the valley are fresh with a carpet of grass that resembles a smooth, green velvet blanket. Growing liberally along the slopes are tall green balsam firs and shrubby juniper trees. Northward extends the gently rolling valley floor.

In a Quiet Valley

The floor of this valley is actually a series of very low, gentle hills which roll from the south to the base of a large cliff that lies to the north. Fresh green grass sways here, and a small stream trickles from a hidden source among the smooth hillocks. A scattering of mountain wildflowers lend their scent to the breeze which blows softly through. A large boulder oddly protrudes from the east.

Ancient Stone Stairs

An open staircase is hewn out of the rock of one of the walls enclosing the narrow path. It looks like it has been here for ages. Its steps are unevenly carved, shallow but well-worn. A banister or a handhold of sorts has also been carved into the wall, a necessity, really, since the steps ascend quite steeply to a point beyond the range of view.

At a Narrow Path

This narrow path cuts through the heart of the mountains, surrounded on either side by sheer walls of rough, grey rock. The walls press in as the path progresses down and to the east. As the path runs north of here past an outcropping of jagged stone, an open staircase hewn from the very mountain is revealed.

On a Narrow Path

This narrow path winds in from the main section of mountain trail to the west and follows a crooked course to the east. It is barely wide enough for a traveller and a small mount to walk through and as it stretches up along a slope it becomes narrower still. It rises and falls, going over and around the large mounds of stone that border and sometimes obstruct the path.

Along a Narrow Path

The narrow path that runs here from the west becomes narrower and narrower, until the rocky walls almost press in on one another. There is scarcely enough room to allow for passage, and any party walking here will have to go single file. Even then the shoulders of the larger members will probably brush the rough walls of stone. The path continues its climb upwards into the mountains.

High in the Mountains

The trail emerges from the mountain pass and winds upwards around the broad side of a mountain slope. The wind begins to blow in this exposed area, its chilly fingers whipping frost at any uncovered parts of the body. Here and there the slope is pock-marked by accumulated layers of stone left here by glacial deposits long ago. The trail continues to ascend the mountain, and vanishes down into the pass.

Higher in the Mountains

As the trail climbs higher, there is a noticeable change in the air. It becomes more difficult to breathe as the air turns colder and thinner. The trail comes dangerously close to the edge of a precipice as it twists up along the slope. Looking down into the sheer vertical drop only reminds one of the way the path dips and curves crazily. Thankfully it looks like the path enters another small mountain pass to the east.

On a Narrow Path

The path becomes narrow once more, perhaps too narrow as the rock faces squeeze together in places, but the feeling of enclosure is not entirely unwelcome after the wind-whipped, exposed slope. The path curves south further into the mountains and back west onto the slope.

Winding Mountain Trail

Curving and twisting in a slow spiral, the trail winds further into the mountains in a meandering fashion. A dusting of snow has drifted from the peaks to decorate the small spires of rock which rise here. The path widens as it travels eastward to stop before the entrance of a large cave, and narrows as it turns south to the mountain pass.

Inside a Giant Cavern

The interior of this huge cavern seems to stretch out in all directions, into narrow tunnels and a series of smaller caves off the large main cave. Some of the tunnels climb upwards, while others go deeper down, perhaps into the very heart of the mountain. The main cavern itself is enormous, its floor and ceiling lined with stalagmites and stalactites three times the size of a man. The sound of slowly dripping water reverberates through the chamber.

Base of the Mountains

This is a small, level area at the base of one of the region's many majestic mountains. Small, worn boulders and piles of loose rubble are scattered across the ground. Winding trails climb up towards the peak and westward into the heart of the mountain range. A path also leads south into the slopes of another mountain.

Around a Mountain

The rocky trail twists its way east and west around the broad side of this mountain. The way is difficult, partially blocked in places by small boulders which have tumbled down. To pass, one must either clamber over or edge carefully around them.

At the Mist Shrouded Peek

White mist drifts about in a heavy cloud, shrouding the top of Tiver's Peak in mystery. What can be seen of it is rocky and uneven, with a light dusting of snow, the rest has blown off into the restless wind whipping the peak. Looking up, a flurry of snowflakes can be seen gusting up to become lost in the white of billowing clouds that stretch on forever in the sky.

Into the Mountains

This small, rough path leads from a bigger trail to the south directly into the mountains. This is clearly not the path used by most travelers, as these mountains are rumored to be filled with untold dangers.

The Air Above a Ravine

This is the air above the northern part of the ravine. To the south the ravine continues, while to the west there is a small landing and a path leading into the mountains. Below leads into the depths of the ravine, where its bottom is hidden in the shadows.

The Western Edge of the Ravine

This is the western edge of a large ravine, to the west of here you see a path winding through the mountains, and to the east a large ravine blocks all foot travel. There is a clearing on the opposite side of the ravine, perhaps it is another path.

The Air Above a Ravine

This is the middle of a large ravine, which extends northwards, southwards and downwards. To the east and west you see flat spots which turn into paths leading off into the mountains.

In a Roc's Nest

Built on a large ledge jutting from the side of the ravine is a nest made of straw, grass and branches. This circular nest is huge! Bits and pieces of corpses lie all around, and there are several recent kills, most of which look like strange bird-women, with the wings of birds, and the faces of disgustingly ugly women.

Forest Of Tethir

The forest is dark and very ominous as the trees are overgrown and entangled in each other. Shafts of light break through the trees but still it's dark. Many small animals are running through the underbrush and the sounds of the forest seem very alive. The sounds of a rushing river and crashing waves are heard through the forest.

Forest Of Tethir

There is a fine mist that floats gently along the forest floor. Small animals lay scattered about in various stages of decay. Long strands of lichen hang down from the tree branches, dew drips off them.

Forest Of Tethir

Between an old, dead log in the forest and a thicket of wild berry bushes, the forest grows tall. Within the trees is a worn trail, looking to be a nice walk in the forest. Some deer tracks meander across the trail.

Long strands of lichen hang down from the tree branches, dew drips off them. The dew glistens in hues of death and darkness. The sounds of waves beating against a rocky shore echo off to the east. The sounds of rushing water are barely heard to the south.

Southern Edge of the Greypeak Mountains

This is the south-western edge of the Greypeak Mountains. A small animal trail runs west into the mountains. To the east, the trail ends at the edge of a thick forest, the path lost in a tangle of brambles. The mountains to the east smell of pine and rain. The peaks rise up sharply, their tops swathed in the grey cottony clouds that give them their name.

Thin Animal Trail

The thin animal trail runs east and west along the southern slope of the Greypeak Mountains. Heavy pine forest surrounds the trail, making the peaks of the mountains occasionally difficult to see. The tenor of the forest is changing virtually before one's eyes, going from thick, lush coniferous trees to a shorter, more scrappy plant adapted to the harsh realities of mountainside living. A dark trail creeps forebodingly to the south.

Branching Trail

A thin east-west animal trail branches north at this point, running up the slope of a small peak. The trail seems to cut up the peak with a single-mindedness, jogging only for large boulders. The west path seems to descend gently along the slopes of the mountains, heading into a more lush forest. It would be a stretch to call the vegetation around the intersection trees, but it clings to the slope with a tenacity that reflects well on the adaptability of life. To the east, the trail continues to climb gently up the edges of the Greypeak mountains.

Atop the Peak

The trail from the south ends at the top of a small forested peak. The trees make it nearly impossible to see anywhere but north-east, where cloud-covered peaks of the mountain range continue to rise. The trail to the south descends to a small animal track running east-west. Other than the gentle swaying of the trees, there seem to be no other sounds.

Cliff's Edge

The thin dirt track ends abruptly at the southern edges of the Greypeak Mountains, sheer cliffs to the east and south stopping any further progress. Looking south, it is possible to see the start of a misty marsh, while to the east lie the dunes of the Great Sand Sea, Anauroch. It is possible to discern a small rocky path running along the edge of a gorge to the north. A small animal track runs west along the forested southern slopes of the Greypeaks.

Edge of a Gorge

A small dirt trail runs along the edge of a deep gorge to the east, while tall peaks rise up sharply to the west. The gorge seems to descend down several hundred feet to the edge of the desert Anauroch. The tall peaks to the west quickly ascend above the tree line, leaving only bare grey rock and lightly spaced shrubs. The path runs north to a tall cliff. Thin handholds have been carved into the edge of the cliff, making it possible to scale its heights.

Atop a Cliff

This is the edge of a tall cliff that overlooks what looks to be a small dirt path running south. It would be possible to descend to that path using the small handholds that have been carved by some ancient hands into the side of the cliff. A small dirt path runs to the north, seeming to end at base of a rocky chimney that allows access to the cloud-covered peaks. There is also a small side branching that runs west around the edge of a mountain peak.

Hidden Heights

This is a small grassy clearing that, while above the tree line, seems quite lush and green. Several mountain goats seem to be playing off in the distance slopes that surround this alpine meadow, and many hares can be seen frolicking in the field. There is a sense of peace and gentleness in this meadow, as if the mountain predators were many miles away. A small trail heads east from this meadow, leading back to the rocky slopes of the Greypeaks.

Hermit's Cave

This small cave is carved out of the stone of the peak above a small alpine meadow. The cave has clearly been inhabited for some time, and the thick stench of unwashed flesh and poorly cured hides fills the small space. There is a rough bedroll of thick branches and mountain grasses in one corner, and a small fire pit at the lip of the cave. Other than descending the slopes to the alpine meadow, there are no other apparent exits.

Steep Ascent

This is the base of a tall peak that ascends up above the cloud cover. Grey rocky stone is scattered about, making the going slow and difficult. The temperature here is cool, due to the cold wind blowing across the peaks. A narrow chimney of stone rises up along the side of the mountain, allowing access to the upper peaks of the Greypeaks. To the south a narrow trail leads down to the southern peaks of the mountain range.

Among the Clouds

The thick ring of clouds surrounding the top of the Greypeak Mountains obscures vision without an artificial light source. The southwestern edges of the central peaks of the mountains are covered in a series of thin narrow ledges that ring the sides of the mountains. These ledges prevent travellers from falling off the sheer-sided heights of the peaks. It seems like it would be possible to follow the ledges north or east from this point. There is also a large series of handholds carved into the side of the mountain that leads down to the lower reaches of the Greypeaks at this point.

Among the Clouds

The thick ever-present clouds above the inner peaks of the Greypeak Mountains make it impossible to see without some source of light. The slope of this northern-most inner peak is quite steep. Only small ledges make it possible to move about at all. At this point, there seems to be a small skinny trail of artificial manufacture that joins up with some of the ledges that ring about this upper slope. The trail runs south, although there seem to be a number of loose rocks that would make travel hazardous. It is also possible to descend the northern slope of the mountain out of the thick cloud cover. Finally, the ledges seem to run along the eastern slope of the mountain peak, making it possible to work your way in that direction.

Dawn Pass Gap

The Dawn Pass Trail is at its highest point here, just below the clouds. There is a small sign pounded into the ground here. To the west, the Dawn Pass Trail descends the western faces of the Greypeaks, before descending into the plains, while to the east, the Trail virtually disappears among the clutter of rock slides and thick underbrush. The temperature here in the Gap is cool, with a brisk wind blowing from off the peaks above. It looks like there might be a small animal track to the north that leads to a tall, narrow canyon in that direction, while a small stone-covered path rises up a steep slope to the peaks to the south.

Princess Captain's

This is the quarters of the Lady Princess Captain of the Knights of the Holy Cloth and Rose. A very soft looking bed sits in the middle of the room with red rose petals sprinkled over and around it. The room is lit by the bright white marble, which the room is crafted from. The only visible exit is back to the east.

Keep Armory

This is the armory room of the Knights of the Holy Cloth and Rose. In this room hangs several racks of almost every implement of hand to hand combat, along with many rows of platemail, boots, gloves, helms and dresses. The exit back to the keep center is in the north.

Keep Sleeping Quarters

A rack of bunk beds, that rises seven beds each, lines the east, north and west walls. Three small rectangular windows are situated near the top of each rack of bunk beds. The floor of the room is a simple sheet redwood.

The Bottomless Pit

Your body hurls at such an immense speed down the bottomless pit that it finally explodes due to all the pressure on the frame of the body.

The Mess Hall

This is a round room, atop the small keep. Several small round tables are scattered throughout the room, while an open fire pit, used for cooking is in the center of the room. The walls are composed out of the same material found throughout the rest of the keep. A flight of stairs lead below.

Beneath the Obelisk

From the looks of all the crumbled rock and ruin of this room, the obelisk above could collapse at any time now. Just standing here is putting your life at extreme risk. Several chunks of the white stone, that the obelisk was crafted from is thrown about the floor here. From the foul stench, it is apparent that a beast has made this ruin its home.

Beneath the Obelisk

Bits of small white stone fall from the ceiling as you make your way into this room. This place is not stable at all, and could collapse on your head at any moment. A foul smell blows in from the south. The blackness of the room is rather peculiar. You can make out some sort of name engraved on the north wall.

Beneath the Obelisk

This room is in total chaos and ruin. Heavy chunks of the obelisk's white stone have fallen from the ceiling to the floor, and has left large gaping black holes above. A mystical black mist covers the entire wall to the east and nothing can be seen through it, because of its thickness. The room rattles and shakes beneath your feet.

Inside the Obelisk

Now inside the obelisk, you find yourself in a totally enclosed yet, transparent room. There are no walls, but the elements from outside do not penetrate these invisible walls. What appeared to be an obelisk from outside of here, was no obelisk at all. Looking out you can see the fields of the dead, and travelers magically appearing from out of a field of light.

Western Base of the Far Hills

Massive peaks reach up into the clouds to the north and south. To the east the forbidding stretch of land that make up the Far Hills dominates the horizon. In the distance to the west one can just make out the Reaching Woods. The surrounding area is silent as if holding its breath in anticipation or fear. Directly above a large tower luminously covers the sky. You notice many hunters heading into the building in the south.

On the Western Face

The rocky slopes of the Far Hills make for difficult climbing. Sparse tree cover offers a small amount of shelter for the animals that make these hills their home. To the west below you can see the base of these hills. The slope continues up to the east.

Summit of the Far Hills

From the summit of these hills you can see far into the countryside to the east and west. Yet from this spectacular height the view to the north and south is still blocked by the towering peaks of the Sunset Mountains.

Path to the Southern Peaks

Along this ridge of the Far Hills this path will take you to the southern peaks of the Sunset Mountains. The land is very uneven. Large boulders and stone outcroppings cover these hills making travel on foot very slow.

Blocked

The path up to the southern peaks is completely blocked here by the landslide. It would take an army of hill giants to clear this rubble. In the rubble you can make out more crushed bodies.

Summit of the Far Hills

A maze of hills sprawls out in all direction below your feet. This rocky upland conceals a number of hidden valleys and caves. An Army could be just around the next bend and you would not know it until it was too late. To the north and south a path along the summit makes its way to the larger peaks.

On the Eastern Face

Large outcroppings of rock make this climb very difficult. Very few trees appear to grow on the eastern slopes. To the west the trail continues up the hills to the summit. To the west the trail continues down the slope.

Eastern Base of the Far Hills

This is the eastern base of the Far Hills. The area is very beautiful as the natural land spreads out, almost as if in a painting. To the north one can see a beautifully constructed castle rising out of the earth, an amazing monument.

Accent into the Northern Peaks

There appears to be no easy way up the face of these peaks. There appear to be small handholds carved into the stone that lead up and to the east. The path behind you to the south heads back to the summit of the Far Hills below.

Southeast End of Yellow Snake Pass

The pass ends here, opening up into the countryside. Once again the warmth of the sun can reach you. The pass extends off out of sight in the distance to the west, while open countryside is to the east. A small sign is posted here along the trail.

Inside Yellow Snake Pass

The pass continues to the northwest and the southeast. The ground shows signs of recent travel by horses. The wind can be heard whistling through the peaks overhead.

Zhentarim Waystop

This is one of the outposts that the Zhentarim use to maintain control of this area. Soldiers can be seen moving in and out of the outpost. You can be well assured that they are not happy about your presence here.

Inside Yellow Snake Pass

The massive peaks of the mountains completely block any view to the north or south. The mountains seem to threaten the sky itself. To the east and west the pass continues. Faint voices can be heard to the west.

Zhentarim Waystop

Here the Zhentarim have set up a small outpost to maintain control of the pass. This serves as a place for the scouts and soldiers to rest and relax when they are not on active duty.

Inside Yellow Snake Pass

The powerful walls of the mountains rise up on the northeast and southeast sides. There is a strange stillness in the air here. No animals have been seen for quite some time. A faint sound of people talking can be heard to the south.

Northwest End of Yellow Snake Pass

Standing just inside the pass one can truly appreciate the incredible size of these mountains. During most of the day the inside of the pass is covered in shadow. Only during the high noon hours do the warming rays of the sun have a chance of reaching ground. A warm wind blows in from the north where the cursed lands of the Anauroch are. There is a sign next to the trail.

In the Air Above the Pass

The valley floor is about 200 feet below. Falling from this distance could cause an immense amount of pain. High up to the north and south you can make out openings in the walls of the valley.

Between Two Peaks

The permanent cloud cover makes it difficult to see very far. You can barely make out the path as it makes its way to the east and south. The ground here seems incredibly even, as if shaped by tools.

Above Yellow Snake Pass

The clouds open up just in time to prevent you from stepping out into mid-air. From this extreme height you can see the valley floor of the Yellow Snake Pass at least 500 feet below. Across the narrow valley to the north you can make out an opening in the mountains much like the one you are standing in now. One would have to be able to fly to reach it from here.

In the Air Above the Pass

The air above the valley is quite peaceful and quiet. You can see the expanse of the pass stretching out to both the east and west. To the north and south mountains completely fill the view.

Face of the Highest Peaks

This crevice path comes to an end at a smooth stone wall. In this dim light you can barely make out the handholds for climbing. To the south the path runs back down the mountain.

A Cliff High on the North Peak

As you reach this large ledge you make your way above the cloud line. The ledge seems to have been carved right out of the side of the mountain. Both the wall and the floor of the ledge are glass smooth. A small campfire has been made in the center of the ledge. There is a small doorway carved out of the wall. As you look out over the top of the clouds you can see for miles to the north and east.

Inside a Stone House

Everything in this house has been fashioned out of stone. The floor has been polished to a nice reflective shine that helps to make this small dwelling appear larger than it really is. There is a stone bed that has all the curves of one crafted out of wood. Things appear clean and in order, someone is obviously currently living here.

The Tower Laboratory

There are no walls, no ceiling and no floor. Looking out, you can more clearly see the fields of the dead. A strange blur prevents you from seeing above here. A large rectangular lab table sits off to the north with many bunts and burners, vials and typical magi ingredients on it. Oddly enough it is very organized and clean. An un-typical wizard must work here.

Hamlar Hills

Rolling hills meet with grassy plainsland before a backdrop of magnificent mountains. The few trees here provide ample shade for trail-weary travelers to rest in, before travelling further towards the mountains or into the shadeless grassland.

Hilltop Plateau

Still quite a distance away, the gentle breeze blowing across the plateau carries but a whisper of the howling winds of the mountains beyond. It is said that on a clear day one can actually witness the mountain peaks, to the west and high above the horizon, disappear into the clouds on high. The trail leads to the east from here, as it zig-zags its way up into the snowy peaks.

Head in the Clouds

This winding path through the mountains seems well kept enough, with clear footing and high walls on either side to prevent an untimely demise by sudden stop - after first falling a great distance. The wind here is unbearably loud and tears fiercely through the open pass. A cloud passes ever so briefly within reach before being ripped away by the monstrous wind.

Trail through the Cloud Peaks

Though sheltered at the moment from the worst of it, the wind can be heard from above clawing its way forcibly through the mountain passes and around the high peaks. The steep mountain walls guide one side of the trail, whilst the other side is open with naught but the winds and a downward leap to certain doom. In one protected alcove, a foot-path leads up into the misty clouds.

Fang Pass Overlook

Distantly the howling winds of the Cloud Peaks can still be heard, the sound falling from high above. The majestic twin spires of Fang Pass, where the trade road passes through the Cloud Peaks range, can be seen from here as well as a vast view of the lands to the North.

Low Clouds

The trail becomes rather slick in spots here as mist and clouds coat the rocky footing. A howling wind echoes from above and mingles with the roar of a nearby waterfall further down the mountainside below. Moss and lichen grow so thickly in some areas that they may even be able to silence a rumbling belly if eaten.

Eastern Range of the Cloud Peaks

To the east lie a range of unsurpassable mountains. Their peaks provide a majestic and breath-taking view, silhouetted against the roiling gray clouds that crown their peaks. The air is cold, and breath condenses into mist at this altitude. Far below, an ice-cold lake has formed in a natural valley in these mountains.

Fang Pass

The trail widens through the lower part of the Fang Pass into the valley below. Even though it is well-kept and groomed, only a very few wagons ever venture through the pass anymore. Amn seems to have cut itself off from the rest of the world, as it seeks the peace and tranquility of an older age.

Western Range of the Cloud Peaks

The western mountain range seems more barren and sparse. Here, the gray rocks and snow are far above the timber line. Even the trees have forsaken this area to reside in the less harsh altitude and climate below. To the west, a lone peak rises into the clouds. A darker shape, perhaps a cave, can be seen at its base.

Mountain View

The treacherous climb up was worth it, as one gazes upon the Cloud Peak range in its wild and natural glory. The fresh scent of snow still lingers in the air. The cold gray rock formations seem to have been thrust from the ground, and then weathered down by the wind and the cold. The wind howls in angry fury and soon the panorama fades from view in a cloud of snow and dust.

On to Mount Speartop

Mount Speartop, so named for the pointy, spear-shaped crag that adorns its peak, looms to the west. The trail curves around the north face of the mountain. The air is cold, and the wind threatens to blow anyone and anything off the side of the mountain. There is a deep shudder and a roar, followed by silence.

Rockslide

The trail is slick here and a landslide prevents further travel on it. The wind howls so loudly, it rips the voice from mere humanoid lungs; no scream would ever be heard. A boulder slips from its resting place above and soon more rocks are sliding down the mountain here.

A Rocky Ravine

The trail follows the north-face of the mountain through a rocky ravine. An avalanche recently fell here, as evidenced by the fresh ground snow lying atop the trail and further down the ravine. One can only hope that no travellers were on the path when it occurred. Despite the chaos caused by the avalanche, a brilliant rainbow can be seen shining down from the sky. It seems to almost touch the ground here.

Not Far Now

The trail wends its way further up the mountain path. One can almost see the snow, glistening like poison, on the "spear" of Mount Spearhead. The wind whips relentlessly over the peaks, carrying with it a dusting of snow, and creating blinding conditions when it drops the snow dust on the trail.

Steep and Craggy Trail

The trail curves around and traverses back and forth across the cliff face. The sheer steepness and altitude make it difficult for even the most hardy of mountain climbers. At this point, one can either climb up to the summit or explore the cave to the west.

Enormous Cavern Opening

A large gaping maw within the cliff face opens up into a cavern. At first, layers of ice have been carved to form the mouth opening. Then rock has been carved where the ice ends. The cave tunnels in to the south. The walls are strange and alien, seemingly out of place in the natural wilderness that one has just traversed through to get here.

The Lair of the Beast

A glorious chamber, blue lit by a single large driftglobe, sprawls into the distance far beyond normal vision. Gold sparkles flash from walls, floor and ceiling alike. It is cold, so very cold that the feeling reaches beyond one's bones and into one's very heart and soul as well.

Summit of Mount Speartop

Though clouds pass furiously around and beneath this point, the winds pass more slowly here on the summit. The only sights to be had from this point are the sky and heavens above, the magical cloudscape below, and an odd set of stairs, seemingly made out of the clouds themselves.

Farm Yard

Little eddies of dust circle the yard of this farmstead. A weather-worn door leading into the farmhouse is to the east. The ramshackle barn that was seen from the hill is a bit to the north. A small vegetable field is to the west.

There is No Place Like Home

In this single roomed farmhouse are all the comforts that one can desire. Along the back wall are cupboards and shelves. That must be the kitchen. To the left is a small bed. In between the bed and the kitchen is a small stove. The middle of the room is dominated by a rickety set of table and chairs.

A Rocky Plain

The terrain of the ground is very rocky, and signs of plants, trees, and animals diminish. A dry, dusty air breezes in from the southwest, revealing hints of cooked jackrabbits from a campfire of nearby travelers. Rocky formations to the south bar passage, and many mountains can be seen in the distance to the southwest.

The Storm Horns

There are a small amount of hills in the area, and the hills are the ecotone that separate the small mountains in the west and the flatlands in the east. Larger mountains can be seen off in the distance to the southwest, while east of this region is all flatland. Small paths lead to the west and to the east, while exits north and south are cut off by rising rock formations. A small sign has been hammered into the rocky ground, and posted here.

The Storm Horns

A moderate amount of mountains accompany the surrounding area, and look to grow thicker towards the southwest, while flatland can be seen in the distance to the east. Mountains arise out of the ground and a narrow trail leads off to the north. Other small paths line their way to the east, south and west.

The Storm Horns

A small, grassy, rocky trail leads to the west and to the east. Few signs of life are out this far into the mountain range, with the mountains lurking all around. The area is quite dry and dusty, and a slight smell of burning meat from a campfire comes from the north.

The Storm Horns

The rocky mountain paths twist and turn in every which way, leading in most directions. The land is dry and cracked from lack of rain water, and bones of horses and cattle are located at the foot of some of the mountains. Mountains have formed all around, but pathways can be made to the north, to the south, and to the west.

The Storm Horns

Small mountains have formed in this region of the mountain range. A few animals wander past this spot occasionally, in search of water in this dry rocky area. Taller mountains can be seen toward the south, while a musty smell wafts in from the west.

A Murky Swamp

A large field of cattails inhabits this large muddy field. A strong smell of methane gas drifts in from the west, while an overwhelming hum of noise fills the air made by the cicada inhabitants of the field. To the west is a small pond, while to the nearby south is a mountain range.

The Storm Horns

The tiny walking spaces between the mountains become very small, and in some cases non-existent. Paths over the mountains themselves, or winding pathways become the only method of travel in some places. Mountains can be seen to the west and to the southeast.

The Storm Horns

Many small mountains rest in the middle of this rocky region. Arising all around, the mountains make passage difficult for the common merchant wagons. The mountains to the east and south have cut off travel completely, while travel around mountains is still possible to the north and to the west.

A Small Mountain

A short rocky mountain looms directly to the south, cutting off travel in that direction. Small rocks litter the ground, and a few withered trees grow in the area. A flat land of rocks can be seen to the north, while mountain tops can be seen in the distance to the southwest. Actually there is a very nice path around the mountain to the forest south.

A Small Mountain

A small mountain is located directly south of this rocky plain. Few trees inhabit this deserted chunk of rock, and vegetation is sparse. A few dead cattle bones are located at the foot of the mountain. To the north appears to be more rocky plains, while everywhere else is surrounded by rock. A small cave entrance leads somewhere to the south.

The Storm Horns

Winding walkways around the mountains have become the only visible method of travel through the mountains. These rocky spirals twist around the mountains many times, only to lead to the other side eventually. Mountains can be seen in most directions.

The Storm Horns

Many tall mountains surround this area of the mountain range, especially those mountains to the southeast. Not a trace of wildlife lives within this rocky region - it is mostly dust, tall snow-capped mountains, and rocks. Mountains can be seen in all directions, but cut off travel to the west.

The Storm Horns

The twisting rocky paths that lead through and around the mountains all converge in this one area, which appears to be the very center of the Storm Horn mountain chain. Mountains rise very high all around, and snow can be seen capping off the tallest of the mountains. Rocky paths lead off from this point in all directions.

The Storm Horns

Many rocky paths appear to converge near the closest mountains, probably marking near the center of the Storm Horn Mountain Range. Tall mountains block most of the view in all directions, but paths can be seen leading in all directions as well.

The Storm Horns

The mountains found in this part of the rocky region are fairly large, although larger mountains are off in the northern horizon. Many boulders and rocks make climbing around the mountains difficult, blocking off the eastward path. Pathways also can be seen to the north, to the west, and to the south.

The Storm Horns

Many small mountains have formed in the southern part of the mountain range, and more bushes and trees can be found in between the mountains. Few signs of wildlife - paw-prints, animal droppings, dead carcasses - denote more and more wildlife activity in the area. Pathways can be found to the north, to the east, and to the south.

A Large Descent

The small rocky path is set at a decline here, the higher part of the path to the north, the lower part of the path to the south. Many horse tracks and wagon tracks are in the dirt leading toward the south, where the decline ends at a large ravine. Large buzzards slowly fly in circles around the top of the mountain path.

Before the Ravine

A large ravine looms to the south, preventing any further movement in that direction. The chasm is dark and misty, and looks very uninviting to travelers. Small wagon wheel tracks in the dirt near the ledge hint toward some poor unfortunate basher's fate. The chasm also prevents movement to the west and to the east. To the north is a large range of mountains.

A Grassy Plain

Waves of tall, thick grass slowly sway in a gentle breeze that blows in from the northwest. Small dragonfly and other various flying bugs dart around in the luscious green grass. To the east the grass is replaced by a wave of cattails, that slowly form near what appears to be a lake. In the distance to the northwest appears to be a mountain range.

A Small Pool

A small sinkhole in the ground, combined with rainwater, has formed a small pool of water in the middle of a grassy field. The water from the pool slowly percolates down the side of the small hill it is on into a much larger lake, located to the east. A few small frogs can be heard croaking nearby, and swarms of gnats form around the pool.

The Storm Horns

Many tall and regal mountains stretch to the sky in this part of the mountain range. Trace evidence of wildlife exits within this rocky region, although the occasional bird flies above. Mountains lead in all directions.

A Small Hill

A small grassy hill sits here in the middle of a large grassy plain. To the east appears to be a small wooded path leading into a small set of trees. A large mountain range is nearby to the west of the hill, leading from the north to the south.

Sea of Swords

Far to the east a dark mass, that might be land, can be seen just rising above the horizon. The ocean rolls with great large surges of water, causing the far-off coastline to appear and disappear behind a hill of blue. The ocean stretches to the horizon in all directions from here.

Sea of Swords

Violently churning, the sea rises and falls, causing the area to be less than hospitable to travelers. Deep waters and strong winds make this one of the most dangerous seas in all the realms, claiming many unfortunate souls. The waters can be seen spanning in all directions.

Coral Reef

Waves break, giving away the presence of a coral reef beneath the waters surface. The white water caused by the breaking waves is a breath taking sight, as the blue liquid curls over itself to crash into the base. The reef lies just below the ocean's surface. The waters continue in every direction.

Sea of Swords

The roaring of the rolling ocean fills the air, playing a rampaging song of violence and confusion. Spreading in all directions to the very edge of creation, the view does little to dispel the confusion. North, south, east, and west leads to more of the blue waters.

Trackless Sea

Every direction looks to be leading to the same dismal end. As far as the eye can see there is a large, endless, watery desert of rolling waves and salty mist stretching out as far as the horizon allows. The sea awaits unwary travelers as they dare to cross the unchanging waters of the Trackless Sea.

Desolate Beach

A rocky, kelp strewn beach stretches the coast of the island. Large clumps of greenish black kelp with brown withering areas, cling to sun bleached jutting rocks that poke out of the sand like the teeth of some unseen beast. The sea gently rolls across the stone tops from the north. To the south a large jungle swallows the landscape.

Trackless Sea

The waves have begun to subside to a low soothing pace of rolling hills of water. A jungle island can be seen on the western horizon. A chance for sanctuary from the unrelenting elements of the ocean. To the west the leads closer to the island, while the east heads out to sea.

Coastal Waters Along The Sea of Swords

As the waters wash eastward the large land mass becomes clearer. The ocean rolls with great surges of water towards the eastern landmass. The landmass also appears to go northward towards the horizon.

Coastal Waters Along The Sea of Swords

As the rolling surges of salty ocean water get closer to the land, it becomes clear that the shoreline goes eastward and northward. The ocean waters are calmer and less violent. The sounds of sea gulls echo in the salty ocean air.

The Shrine of Cyric

Like the rooms below, this one also has transparent walls, with the exception to the north wall, which is covered by a red mist in the background, while the symbol of Cyric, a dark sunburst with a jawless skull in its center levitates in the foreground. A black and red marble altar floats in the middle of the floor with a jawless skull resting on top of it. A powerful magic prevents you from seeing above or below from here.

Top Floor of the Red Wizard Tower

This invisible walled room is nearly one hundred feet in the sky over the fields of the dead. Visible from here are the many cities which encompass this area. To the north many hill giants can be seen roaming. To the northwest is a city covered in mist, the tower of puck and the city of Jayven. This room is filled with arcane magics, evil and power. Unless death is you wish - it might be a very good idea to depart now.

The Forgotten Cavern

This cavern brews with an immense staleness, as if it hasn't had the slightest taste of fresh air in centuries. This place has obviously been forgotten - by whom or what is hard to tell. The cavern floor begins to show its age and tender-ness as it starts to move and crumble beneath your feet.

A Rock Slide

The floor falls and tumbles quickly, and you with it. Many of the larger stones are right above and could deliver a crushing blow if you don't get out of the way - FAST.

The floor falls and tumbles quickly and you with it. Many of the larger stones are right above and could deliver a crushing blow if you don't get out of the way - FAST.

Beneath The Forgotten Cavern

The roof of this cavern is very sturdy, as it prevents the collapsing tunnel above from coming any further, as you slip through a small hole in the ceiling along with many smaller stones and debris. The sounds of hissing and quivering shadows can be heard and seen in all directions.

Beneath The Forgotten Cavern

These tight stale forgotten caverns appear to be the home of an ancient breed of snakemen - who appear to be the direct ancestors of the evil snakemen of the Lost City. What went wrong? The cavern walls are carved with many signs and images, which appear to tell a story of how this tribe of snakemen were left to die by the Goddess Lillith, after she took their young and made them evil and worship the darkness and idols. More cavern is to the south, while a bright light can be seen to the north.

Beneath The Forgotten Cavern

The walls of this portion of the cavern are a glowing white light, which is almost blinding. More hieroglyphics are interwoven into the cavern walls here. They read that after the Goddess Lillith left them here to die, they, on the brink of starvation and cannibalization sought out the Goddess of Nature Bathsheba. Being a lower Goddess than Lillith, she could not deliver them, but she has kept them alive over the centuries by providing the fruits of the earth to nourish them. A dark cavern can be found to the south.

Forest Of Tethir

The dark shadow, cast by the trees amongst the Forest of Tethir, breaks slightly for what seems to be the grounds of some sort of ceremony. A huge burning banishing pentagram of insects covers most of the ground here, and overhead, the leaves of the trees are turned inside out - distinctive of the ascendancy transpiring below.

A Muddy River Bank

The trees overhead are high and full. Their foliage casts a dark canopy over this area. The ground is muddy from the rivers to the south and what appears to be a man made barrier to the north. Looking across the river to the north, you can see many buildings and some sort of civilization, but some sort of arcane magic prevents you from swimming or flying across the river.

A Wooden Bridge

A black covered wooden bridge rises out of the water to make a safe passage to the north and south. To spend most of its time underwater, the wood of the bridge shows no effect of rotting or being water logged. A camp of some sort can be seen to the north, and a trail back to the river in the south.

A Marble Walkway

Oddly, this black marble walkway is covered with snow, even during the warm climate you experienced on the other side of the man made river. A large round top temple sits off to the west. It is constructed of a greyish white marble. On the door of the temple is the symbol of a white snowflake on a gray diamond.

The Temple of Auril

This is the worshiping Temple of Auril. There are no windows and no candles or lighting elements fixed to the walls. Painted on all the walls, floor and ceiling is the symbol of Auril - a white snowflake on a gray diamond. A pulpit sits three steps off the floor. The door behind the pulpit must lead to the quarters of the dark priest.

The Quarters of the Dark Priest of Auril

This is the living quarters of Banoe'rah Ur Draxa, the dark priest of this Cult of Auril. His living space is rather simple. A singular bed sits in the middle of the room over a grey diamond rug with a white snowflake on it. A small round window is situated in the ceiling. The door back to the temple is in the east.

A Marble Walkway

The snow covered marble walkway continues to the north and south of here. Scents of well cooked food are pouring in from the east. The red brick building must be the mess hall for this Cult of Auril. The sound of bubbling water can be heard in the north.

Cult of Auril Mess Hall

This mess hall has a large open kitchen in the east and many rectangular tables about the floor of the hall. This room is tremendously large. It seems like it could seat about one thousand or so people at once. Gauging from the maps and ethos printed on the walls, this room must often be converted into a meeting or campaign room also.

A Marble Walkway

A large silver water fountain in the shape of a snowflake stands erect here, about fifteen feet south of the door to a building in the north. This building is also composed of red brick and rises two stories high, with a tower poking out from its top, and many windows. It must be a housing unit for this Cult of Auril. More snow covered walkway continues to the south.

Frostmaiden Hall

These are the dimly lit halls of the living quarters for the members of the Cult of Auril. A small oil lamp hangs from the ceiling. The flame of the lamp doesn't emit much light because of the very odd and very air that lingers throughout this building. The hallway continues to the north.

The flame of the lamp doesn't emit much light because of the very odd and very air that lingers throughout this building. The hallway continues to the south and a stairwell can be seen in the north.

A Dark Stairwell

A twisting stairwell leads up to the second floor of living quarters of the members of this Cult of Auril. The railing comes in handy here, as the lack of light could easily cause you to slip, fall and die. Frostmaiden Hall begins in the south.

Room 1D

Two bunk beds are situated on the north wall and a wooden desk in the south. A small rectangular window is in the eastern wall towards the top, and an oil lamp hangs from the ceiling. This room is cold and dry. The only visible exit is in the west.

Room 1C

A Dark Stairwell

A twisting stairwell leads down to the first floor of living quarters of the members of this Cult of Auril. The railing comes in handy here, as the lack of light could easily cause you to slip, fall and die. Frostmaiden Hall begins in the south.

A Dark Stairwell

A twisting stairwell leads up to the tower. Even the oil lamps can penetrate the cold dark damp air here. A mist of frost pours out of your nose and mouth as you speak and breathe. Frostmaiden Hall begins to the north.

Room 2A

Two bunk beds are situated on the north wall and a wooden desk in the south. A small rectangular window is in the eastern wall towards the top, and an oil lamp hangs from the ceiling. This room is cold and dry. The only visible exit is in the west.

Room 2B

Two bunk beds are situated on the north wall and a wooden desk in the south. A small rectangular window is in the western wall towards the top, and an oil lamp hangs from the ceiling. This room is cold and dry. The only visible exit is in the east.

A twisting stairwell leads up to the tower. Even the oil lamps can penetrate the cold dark damp air here. A mist of frost pours out of your nose and mouth as you speak and breathe. More stairs can be found below.

The Watchtower

This watchtower stands above the living quarters of the members of the Cult of Auril. Looking out over this tower, you can see the villages of Ravenclaw, Troll Moors and Elf Shadow to the north. It's a scary vision, seeing Trolls living in that close proximity to elves. The statue of Mayor Sinclair can be clearly seen as you look towards the south.

A Muddy River Bank

This muddy river bank has a difficulty ever drying because of the continual shades cast by the thick trees overhead. A large flat rock covers the ground here. It looks like a good place to picnic or take a break from the river.

Traders Pit Lobby

This is the lobby of Traders Pit. Many rangers, hunters and poor lost souls make their way into the lobby. A large black bear rug covers most of the floor of this large look. Many heads of legendary beasts line the walls. The inn is to your south, while the fence and diner is to the west and east of here respectively.

Traders Pit Inn

The receptionist waits for you to sign your name, fork over some cash so he can hand you a key to your room. A black and white zebra rug spreads across the floor, and a simple oaken large torch is situated on the east wall.

Traders Pit Fence

This is the fence of Traders Pit. They make nothing here, but buy, trade and sell most things. Several items of jewelry are viewable in the glass case on the north wall. Hunters clothes are hanging throughout the room, and weapons of all sorts are behind the clerks counter.

Traders Pit Sit-n-Grub

This is where real men come to eat. No small portioned meals are served here and no appetizers either. You can hear the sounds of animals being slaughtered right behind the east door. Fresh food and cold beer served here at Traders Pit Sit-n-Grub.

Squishy Ground

Long grass borders a road to the south. The ground here is rather soft and squishy. All that water must be why the grass is so tall! To the north, the grasses seem to change into cat-tails.

Cat-tail Swamp

Cat-tails grow ten to twelve feet high here, obscuring sight in all directions. It should be easy enough for anyone to push through the cat-tails in any direction. There might be a boulder or something tall to the north, but it is difficult to tell. A dragonfly flits around the top of a cat-tail. He has a good view of everything, but he's not going to tell what he sees.

Cat-tail Swamp

Cat-tails grow thickly here, though they seem to thin out to the east under the shade of some willow branches. To the west, brambles are fighting an ongoing battle with the cat-tails; it looks most uncomfortable to travel into the region of the battle. It looks rather soggy to the south.

Swampy Pool

This is not a nice place to go swimming. A huge, shallow pool collects scum and muck from the surrounding swamp; it looks decidedly unhealthy. Thick brambles to the west prevent passage, but in other directions the swamp is much drier and safer.

Quillwort Swamp

Strange little stubby plants poke up from the mud here. They are rapidly being overtaken by brambles which are growing in from the west and south. To the east, a granite boulder rises above the rest of the swamp. A large pool stretches north, and it doesn't smell very nice.

Bramble Swamp

Tangled brambles sprawl over the soggy ground here. There isn't much to see, nor is there much to do except get poked. It is probably possible to go north or east without excessive blood loss.

Swampy Stream

A sluggish stream flows eastwards through the swamp here. The water appears to collect around the base of a stand of willow trees to the west and north. Cat-tails line the stream-bank to the north and funny little stubby plants grow abundantly along the southern shore.

Swampy Stream

A sluggish stream arrives from the west, turns northwards, and disappears into a mass of reeds. Reeds grow on all sides. They are thick to the north, extremely thick to the south, and stupendously ridiculously thick to the east. It's possible to push through reeds, of course, at least normally. But you'll have to choose your directions carefully to actually make any progress. Past the reeds to the south is a dense forest of willows.

Edge of the Vast Swamp

The river Wyvernflow rushes by to the north. On the far side of the river is a mighty forest, misty and foreboding. To the south is a mighty swamp, squishy and foreboding. Someone has helpfully placed large stepping-stones across the river to the north so that wanderers can jump from the frying pan into the fire with a minimum of difficulty. To the east is a small pool surrounded by a dense thicket of swamp-willows.

Fields of the Dead

A wide expanse of grassland can be seen to the west. Round, low hillocks, covered by tall, brownish-green grass extend as far as the eye can see. Insects buzz all around. The beginnings of a trail can be seen to the east, leading into the rocky hills that rise to the north.

Fields of the Dead

These are the Fields of the Dead. Many great battles were once fought here. Every now and again bones can be found within the tall grass. The bones are dirty and caked with mud as nature reclaims her own. The fields extend to the west in a forest of grass-covered cairns. To the east the terrain becomes rockier.

Fields of the Dead

High grass is growing here, gently swaying in the breeze. A bit of trampled grass can be seen among the cairns. Sometimes large animals hide out in the grasses, stalking the local game. Besides the mounds, there is little evidence that battles were once fought in these flat plains.

The Fields of Gold

The grass grows high, brown and tan. The sea of grass sways in whatever breeze tends to blow here. In the grass bits of bone occasionally can be found, partially buried. Large animal droppings also can be found in the dirt. A large stone blocks the way south, while burial mounds extend in every other direction.

Fields of the Dead

The field gets greener here as the soil absorbs water from a nearby river. Large yellow wildflowers dot the area and insects buzz around. Small birds fly in the sky overhead, chirping and calling. The fields and their sea of burial mounds extend in every direction.

Fields of the Dead

Cattle graze on the rich grass that abounds here, climbing the low cairns as if they were natural hills. A few farmhouses can be seen to the south, closer to the river. The plains to the north, east and west are largely uninhabited.

The Fields

A sea of grass extends north and south of here, topping the curvaceous landscape created by the numerous burial mounds. The wind blows waves on the golden sea. Animals often roam about the fields, feeding on the grass. Besides the grass, only the occasional flower grows here.

Fields of the Dead

There is a break in the cairns here. A small area has been trampled down making a miniature clearing. It looks like a large object was responsible for flattening the grass. It is strange but harmless. The fields extend to the east, west and south.

Obelisk

A large obelisk stands here, made entirely of solid marble. Carved into it is an inscription which has faded over time. This was obviously erected as a monument. It doesn't seem to have been kept up and the tall grass grows around it. The stone blocks the way to the north and east. The fields extend to the south and west.

Fields of Grass

The Fields of the Dead are named after the countless battles fought on these plains, not as a warning of rampaging undead. Wide-bladed grass grows tall here in the hard ground. Flowers often dot the landscape, coloring the sea of cairns. The fields extend to the east and west.

Edge of Fields

This is the eastern edge of the Fields of the Dead. The tall grass here sways in the wind. Flowers grow in the fields and birds fly around, chasing the many insects buzzing about. A dark trail starts off to the north, leading deeper into the Forest of Wyrms. To the west an endless number of burial mounds can be seen.

Fields of Grass

Tall grass grows here swaying in the breeze. Yellow wildflowers grow within them adding golden hues to the brownish grass. A number of hillocks, resembling burial mounds, appear everywhere, becoming more frequent to the south. The Fields of the Dead extend to the north and east.

Edge of the Fields

The fields thin out here and the grass grows short. The ground is tough and slightly rocky. The grass has a difficult time growing in this sort of terrain. The fields look greener to the south. A large animal skull lies here on the ground, as if constantly watching whoever passes by. To the east there seems to be a construction of some kind.

Cave under Obelisk

This is a small, rocky cave buried under the obelisk. It seems sort of odd, yet it remains here cloaked in darkness. Small stalactites hang from the ceiling.

The River Delimbiyr

The river flows under a bridge of a great road. Several kids play with carved wooden boats along the bank, while others are throwing leaves over the east side of the bridge and seeing whose will appear first on the west side. The current is slow and lazy, moving west through a sandy river delta, just north of a marsh.

The River Delimbiyr

Flowing past the low foothills of the coast, the river cuts a wide channel. To the west, the onshore breeze smells of brine and tastes of salt. Far to the east is a dark forest. The sound of laughter fills the air, yet there is no one around. The source becomes apparent after looking closer at the shore.

The River Delimbiyr

The river turns south in a very narrow canyon. A loud roaring can be heard echoing from the canyon's mouth. To the north a trail is blocked off. It seems to be heading to a dark keep, yet it is clear that the owners or residents do not want company. The current is very swift here. A slippery trail leads off to the west.

The River Delimbiyr

The stream flows over boulders and rocks and winds its way southwest. It increases in size as it flows past thick forest to the west and south. Slippery salmon strive to move their way upstream to get to the headwaters, home so they can complete their life cycle. Hungry bears, birds and wolves stalk the driven fish in the river.

The River Delimbiyr

Here at the headwaters of the River Delimbiyr is a small, clear, pristine lake. Herons fish the nearshore waters, and a bear lumbers off into the thick forest at your approach. Tall pines moan in the fresh breeze off the mountains. A stream starts to flow to the southwest, growing both in size and pace as it moves down towards the Sea of Swords.

The River Dessarin

The river flows gently to the west. Small farms dot the countryside, and the land near the river has been planted with barley, wheat and corn. The banks of the river are covered with wildflowers, creating a mosaic of color in the spring.

The River Dessarin

The river grows wider to the west as it flows from its source in the High Forest. The forest is a bit thinner here and as the river flows further west, the forest gives way to rolling hills of sage and oak. Deer come here often to drink of the crystal clear waters. Near shore in the clean water, it is possible to see fingerlings. Towards dusk, the river catfish put on an aerial display, jumping from its depths to bid the sun goodnight.

The River Dessarin

The spring widens into a stream and then a brook before gathering enough force and flow to become a river. The forest grows thick and lush around here. A hawk flies to a low pine branch, only to be chased away by the meadowlarks that inhabit the forest. To the south is a large meadow. The serene gurgling flow seems to strip away the tensions and stress of everyday life.

The River Dessarin

Here at the headwaters of the River Dessarin, a bubbling underground spring gurgles forth the waters of one of the major rivers of this valley. The forest is thick all around. The forest floor must slope to the west, as the spring has found an opening and a way to flow there. It burbles over rocks becoming a large river to the west.

The River Dessarin

The river is colder here, flowing from the snow-capped peaks of the Spine of the World. The channel is deep cut and the current is swift. There are a few back rapids to the south, where the river seems to flow together and merge with another fork flowing south.

The River Dessarin

The river swells here with the merging of The Laughing Flow from the east. A dark wood is to the northeast. To the west are the foothills leading up to the mountains. Scrub oak and manzanita cloak the hills like a dark green blanket.

The Laughing Flow

The stream flows west into a wide river. The water here is choppy as it encounters the flow of the new river. Churning waters bring up mud, and the river turns brown from the chaos. The banks have eroded and fallen trees litter the banks on both sides of the Laughing Flow.

The Laughing Flow

The forest grows thick all around the stream as it flows from the east to the west. A faint roar can be heard from the west, as if there were rushing water there. Its sound is only muffled by the thick growth of trees. A flat rock peeks out of the water on the northern bank. It is a perfect place for sunning or to sit while fishing.

The Laughing Flow

The Laughing Flow is a small, swift-moving stream that winds its way to the southwest, where it will join the larger River Dessarin. Here the stream winds its way around rocks and through tall pine trees. Echoing laughter resonates in the older groves as the wind blows through the trees.

The Laughing Flow

The river flows from a swift-flowing stream to the north, where it goes under a covered bridge. The water flows downstream to the south-west. The forest grows tall here. An occasional elf can be seen making their way through the woods, heading north.

The River Rauvin

The river flows shallow and wide just to the north of a large swamp. To the north of the river, across which one could easily wade, are the low-lying hills that border the tall mountains of The Spine of the World. From here, one can see Dead Orc Pass, through the hills to the north-east. Although no one knows what killed them, none wants to be the first to go and find out.

The River Rauvin

The river widens and slows here at the north end of a large swamp. Perhaps these are the famous Troll Moors that one keeps hearing of. If that is the case, then one must proceed with caution, unless of course, one is a troll! The water is shallow and can be easily crossed by foot.

The Shining River Rapids Trail

The trail leads east up the steep, rocky canyon. The Rapids can be seen churning in the deep canyon to the south. The roaring water makes it difficult, if not impossible to hear anything else.
