A small cavern, lit only by a fire in the corner. A wooden throne covered by gray animal hides, with carvings of wolf heads on the armrests and strange runic symbols etched into the sides sits in the middle of the room. Shuffling and scratching can be heard throughout the cavern and glints of feral eyes can be seen from the dark recesses of the room. An old wizened dwarf sits on the throne clutching a dark staff of power and clothed in animal hides stares at you, wondering why you enter his home.
This is the center of a fairly large room. Four great pillars reach up to unknown heights and on these pillars are etched strange symbols which are painted with even stranger pigments. The same symbols are visible on the floor, after the age old layers of dust have been swept away that is. The walls of this room are visible only from the torches on the pillars, and in some of the corners of the room great statues can be seen. In the exact center of this area lies a great altar covered in old reddish stains and even more disturbing symbols. The altar itself is huge and on it is a large chest, seemingly carved from a single block of obsidian. The craftsmanship is so perfect that the lid is barely discernible from the rest, and also, no keyhole can be found.
At the northern wall of the room, the symbols on the walls have changed into disturbing pictures of emaciated people, men and women who must be on the brink of death, their faces locked in a rictus of pain and unbearable agony. High up on the wall there is depicted another darker form, although this figure is also thin with hunger his eyes gleam with what seems to be an unholy joy at the suffering he sees. A small stone door is visible in the center of the wall.
The carvings here have all but stopped, a skull here and there alone are visible and the ceiling is still too far up to see. The only other point of interest is the huge stone statue on a pedestal in this corner of the room. It holds a huge two-handed sword clenched between its fists and its face is hidden behind a vicious looking faceplate. Its armor is obviously archaic and the only thing not made of stone on it is a small leather pouch on its hip.
Along the wall different symbols are noticed. It seems that this entire wall has been covered with carvings of graves and gravestones, some which are still empty. On the heavy iron portcullis which blocks a passage to the east, there is an ancient crumbling black banner with a grinning skull and sword depicted upon it.
The now expected carvings have completely stopped along the walls here, making the set of armor standing against the wall look extremely alone. But wait... did that set of armor just move?
The carvings at this end of the room are downright disgusting. Heaps of bodies covered in vermin, maggots and flies are depicted over most of the wall and in the background there is a dark haze, almost impossible to make out... the only thing which sets it apart from a simple cloud are the two small slits in the center, almost looking like eyes peering at all who come near. Near the top of the wall is a small rusty grate with a huge lock.
This part of the room is inexplicably dark, even the walls seem to be made of some strange substance which absorbs light. The rest of the room can only be seen by the torches upon the pillars in the center of this area.
The challenges carved on this wall are almost unbearable to the typical adventurer. On the wall is depicted a horde of massive warriors armed to the teeth with various ancient looking weapons and unusual armor, each with a leering, taunting look. On either sides of the huge gate in the wall are carvings of scantily clad women beckoning all to enter if they dare.
For some reason the inhabitants of this place decided to cover the walls here with brass plates as high as the eye can see. The plates somewhat reflect the brass statue standing in this corner of the room making it seem like there are hundreds of the statue and not just one.
This passage seems to go nowhere, apart from back to the altar chamber. The only thing out of the ordinary here is a small human skull on the south wall.
This is the northern edge of a large field. Piles of rotting bodies can be seen scattered around the field and the area is strangely devoid of scavengers of any form. Unlike the altar chamber, this field is open to the sky, not that there is much to see. There are no clouds or birds or even a sun, although light seems to be coming from somewhere. The wall surrounding this area is covered with claw marks and patches of dried blood, and for some reason there is a lit torch fastened to the wall.
The stench here is unbearable and the source of the stench curdles the stomach. Bodies upon bodies are piled against the wall and it is obvious that these people didn't die from any form of battle since there are no weapon marks upon them, only gaping sores and strange lumps and rashes can be seen as any cause of death. The head of one poor victim seems to be covering some markings on the wall.
From here a large pile of bodies can be seen to the north and to the south, and further to the south some movement can be seen. To the east there is a small gathering of bodies.
There are only a few dead bodies here but the fashion in which they died is particularly disturbing. The bodies have weapons at their sides making it seem that they were preparing to go into battle but in front of each is some old and now decayed food, and all the food is about half eaten. It is obvious that their enemy will go to any means to defeat them, even poisoning their rations.
A small encampment occupies the area here and it seemed to be the launching place for a large attack on some unknown force. Weapons are strewn all over the ground, as are the bodies of the ones who died waiting for the attack. As already seen, the people died from some form of disease and the results of the disease are effective as all other evidence found so far. Off to the west a small gathering of these soldiers seem to have grouped together for some reason.
This is the eastern edge of the battlefield and movement can be sensed to the south and southwest. To the north a huge gaping pit can be seen and to the west lies a small encampment.
The sight here is truly horrific. A huge mass grave has been dug and in it must be over a hundred burnt diseased bodies, and it is evident that at one time the bodies were lit on fire, perhaps in hope of stopping the spread of the sickness and there is still a light smog over the pit.
Apart from a few dead bodies there is nothing to be seen here. A little ways to the west a large mound of bodies can be seen and a short way to the south is what seems to be a small encampment. Just to the east is a large hole in the ground with some sort of black smog hovering over it.
This is the site of a somewhat recent battle, it seems that a small number of soldiers managed to formulate an attack before they too were killed by the strange disease which has ravaged this area. Among the human bodies littering the ground there are also other types of bodies, similar to humans yet bigger and the marks of disease which have ravaged the humans look almost normal on the others.
Suddenly there is movement and strange noises all around, clawed hands break from the ground and begin pulling the rest of something horrible to the surface. The noises become howls and shrieks and the only ways of escape are to the north towards a small campsite, to the east towards an old battlefield or further into the fray of death.
The movement is all around now and there are creatures, many creatures clawing their way out of the ground. Strange shrieks come from the darkening sky and great shambling creatures are everywhere. The only directions to escape are to the west towards a huge pile of corpses, to the north towards a small odd looking gathering, or deeper into the fray.
Only the most brave adventurer can look upon this sight without turning tail and fleeing. The mound of death found here must be three men high and six men wide and is filled with not only dead soldiers but women and children as well. The sky also seems to be getting progressively darker and more movement can be seen to the south and to the east.
The sky is almost jet black and the only source of light is a strange unearthly moon. Strange grotesque creatures are all over this area, shuffling to and fro as if searching for something. Suddenly, grins begin appearing on the monsters' faces as they finally find what they have been looking for, fresh bodies.
The only source of light in this darkness is a strange moon high in the sky which makes the multitudes of creatures here easily visible. In all directions now can be seen more movement, and most of it is getting far too close for comfort. The creatures already in this small area turn towards the scent of fresh meat and begin closing in.
The strange creatures are still shambling towards the scent of fresh meat and blood and there is no safe looking exit. A strange looking cloud can be seen in the eastern corner of the field and right now, anywhere looks better than in the midst of these things.
A strange dark mass is hovering over a freshly dead body located in this corner of the field and right behind it there is a small opening in the ground with an old ladder sticking out of it, covered only by an old rotting hatch. In a frighteningly short period of time, the first pinkish colour of the bodies' skin is turned into a deep grey, blotches start appearing on the face and body and the dark mass begins glowing with a strange purple light. The body keeps losing its integrity and the glow around the mass keeps getting brighter and brighter until the mass itself begins changing, and by the time the body is just a set of bones there is now a great dark creature, clutching an old mottled staff in one gnarled claw. Its body is covered with interlocking black and green plates and its long tail twitches madly behind it, and upon its face, its great maw is split open into a grin showing its long curved fangs
This passageway rapidly slopes downward and continues on for quite a while. The walls gradually turn from stone to earth, and a musky smell gets stronger as the passage goes further north and down. To the south a small stone door leads back to the altar room and further to the north a three way intersection can be seen.
The passageway eventually evens out but it is obvious that this is now very far underground and the air itself seems thin. Whoever dug this tunnel decided that it was unsafe and so every 10 feet or so there are wooden supports doing their best to keep from a cave-in. Further to the south a small stone door can be seen and to the north is a three way intersection.
This is a small underground three way intersection and there is not much of interest here. Far to the south is a doorway to the altar room and to the north and east there are extremely dark rooms, so dark that there is no way to fathom what they contain.
As you enter the stone walls begin shifting and warping as does your body. Suddenly bright flashes of light begin flying by from every possible direction and one strikes you in the face. Blinded temporarily you stumble around and when your vision clears you find yourself in another place entirely.
You find yourself losing all sensation of gravity and the entire world begins spinning around you. A speck of light is suddenly visible in the distance and the spinning whirls you towards it.
Looking around, the only place that this could be is a large jail, but for some reason all the cells are open to each other and the doors which would normally be between these cells just aren't there anymore. Strange creatures inhabit the cells to the north and to the east and to the northeast a figure sits sleeping in the corner of the room.
The doors to this cell have for some reason disappeared, but the pathetic little creature cringing in the corner does not look like it is planning to escape any time soon. To the east a large figure can be seen sitting in the corner and is either asleep or dead, and to the south and south east are jail cells like this one, missing their doors.
A large guard sits in the corner of this room fast asleep, and since none of the inmates of this strange jail seem to be going anywhere, there isn't much else for this guard to do apart from sleep. Next to the sleeping guard is a little stool and desk, both empty of anything of interest and to the north is a closed wooden door, hopefully the way out.
This cell is especially dirty and most of the mess looks like it came from the creepy little creatures sitting up against the stone wall of the cell. Although the door to their cell is non-existent, they don't seem very anxious to escape their current situation, they just sit and stare at the far walls of the western cell. To the north a large unmoving figure is noticed, and to the west and northwest are doorless cells like this one.
As you step through the door you begin to feel uncomfortable as if you were being removed from this world. You begin to melt into the wall, then through the wall as some unknown force takes you to somewhere that looks familiar.
The dampness clings in the air here indicating how far underground this hallway actually is. All along the ancient stone walls are emaciated humanoids, many dead and the rest obviously in their last moments of their pathetic existence. Somehow they must have become trapped down here and over time, ran out of food, there is even evidence that they have started on each other. The dank hallway continues to the north.
Some of the corpses lying on the ground have begun to stink but this does not deter the other starving people from turning slowly into cannibals. Already there is disgusting evidence of some using their former friends as a last chance of survival, and those who obviously don't approve are beginning to take interest. This depressing stone hallway ends to the south and continues to the north until it reaches a black archway.
To the south emaciated people can be seen lying beside the wall but thankfully there are none present here. The air is beginning to get stifling and thin, as if it is being sucked out of the hallway by the strange black archway to the north. A group of thin people are gathered around the archway for some reason, not much else about them can be seen from here.
A small group of ragged, thin people are crowded around the large black archway to the north. Most of them are waving their fists madly and hollering at someone or something on the other side of the arch, and a few of these poor people seem to have given up hope and are just lying on the ground and sobbing. All of these people are frighteningly thin and without some proper nourishment it does not look like they will last much longer. This hallway continues to the south.
You stand in an empty void, the only substantial thing apart from yourself is the dark stone roads leading in all possible directions, some even twisting in ways that seem impossible. As you look around your surroundings, an inexplicable hunger begins gnawing at your stomach and you know that you have to get out of here fast.
You stand in an empty void, the only substantial thing apart from yourself is the dark stone roads leading in all possible directions, some even twisting in ways that seem impossible. As you look around your surroundings, an inexplicable hunger begins gnawing at your stomach and you know that you have to get out of here fast.
You find yourself suddenly on a great platform just hovering in this void. Behind you you can see the twisted looping roads and you wonder how you managed to get through them. Along the sides of this platform are chained emaciated humanoids of all races and both sexes and walking among them, chuckling quietly to himself is a great slob of a man. From the looks of the size of his stomach it must be able to contain at least six of his prisoners at once, after all wouldn't the Lord of Famine feed upon the pain caused by hunger in others? In the center of the platform a strange pool can be seen.
This is a large room, with an archway to the west leading to parts unknown. On the northern wall of this room there is a small wooden table and chair, and sitting upon the chair is a grinning old dwarf, running his thumb along the edge of a sharp axe resting on the table. The old dwarf sits up as he notices visitors and motions for all to come closer. Apart from the dwarf and the arch, there is also a small sign attached to the wall next to the archway.
The torches on the walls here have long burned out making things very hard to see, there are strange shadows everywhere, and some seem like they really shouldn't be there. To the east the door back out of the gauntlet has disappeared leaving a solid stone wall and to the north is another dark room.
The stone on the walls of this room are covered with a light film of moisture, as if something wet has brushed over them fairly recently. There is a large puddle of water on the ground, but for some reason the water is rippling even though there is nothing here that could cause that ripple. There is a door to the west and an open passageway to the south.
Brightly lit torches adorn the stone walls in this room, giving it an almost lived in feeling. Looking up, it seems that the ceiling has practically disappeared and what looks to be a huge nest can barely be seen attached to the side of the wall some hundred feet up. The only visible exits are back through the door or south, further into the gauntlet.
For some reason the walls here are literally covered with sputtering torches and only a few are burned out. Along the southern wall are three cages, inside two of them, shivering naked men are chained head to toe with bleeding lacerations covering their entire bodies. They seem to be screaming but for some reason no sound is coming from their mouths. The occupant of the third cage is attached to the wall by a variety of hooks and other unspeakable things and a beast of a man is whipping him with a metal tipped flail. The way to the west seems to be getting dark as is the exit to the north.
This room has enough light to see the two armored guards standing on either side of a large door. The insignia on the door, a huge mailed fist, matches that on the guards' shields. Unmoving they hold their great broadswords at the ready and stare blankly into space, it is hard to tell if they are even alive.
A huge black throne dominates this greatly decorated room and upon the walls are hung heads of possibly every single type of mortal creature in existence making this a very gruesome trophy room. The ceiling is high and vaulted, as if this was a cathedral, dedicated to the being who is presently sitting on the throne. To the left and right of the throne are guards like the ones guarding the entrance to this room, and the being on the throne is even larger than the standing guards. His body is covered in full black plate armor with a massive horned helm upon his head. In his right hand he clutches a great sword and his left hand is clad in a great iron gauntlet. Off to the side of the room a small shimmering pool can be seen.
The great stone walls of this great chamber are covered with banners and tapestries, most depicting great battles or long sieges, but for some reason none are showing a very good situation for those shown. In all cases, the armies are being slaughtered by dark creatures, like wraiths or shades and there is a repeating figure within all the different pieces of art, a large man clad in black leathers with a thin deadly blade at his waist and a crown fashioned from a skull upon his head. This figure is always painted out to the corners of the picture, or in shadows, never in clear sight but one thing remains the same no matter what, the grin of delight across his face is always there. Through the portcullis the altar room is visible and to the east the stone walls continue but the amount of tapestries reduces greatly.
There are few tapestries on the hard stone walls showing scenes of battles and death and a strange dark figure is noticed in each. The floor here has been covered with polished planks of wood and to the north it seems that the stone walls have also been covered with wood giving this area a much more civilized feeling. Far to the north one can see a small person sitting at a desk scribbling at something.
Unnoticeable until standing almost in front of them, set inside the wall are small ledges in which are set skulls of various types of creatures. Below each skull is a small plaque describing what type of creature was butchered to attain this gruesome prize. The passage bends away to the south and disappears from sight whereas to the north a small old man can be seen sitting at an old desk and scribbling at something.
There is a beautifully crafted oak door on the eastern wall and next to it is a large wooden desk. Sitting at this desk is a tiny old man scribbling in some great book which is almost as big as he is. Nailed to the walls are torn pages of some book, perhaps from the one that the little man is working in, and on each page is a sketch of a crown which seems to be fashioned from a human skull. To the south the passage continues out of this area.
This room looks like an antechamber of sorts, to the north and south small guard posts can be seen and on the western wall, next to an exit leading into a smaller hallway is a ledger. Closer examination of the ledger reveals names of many well known people, but the problem is, all of these names are out of legend and folklore and after each name is the date of their death.
A large darkly clad guard stands at attention here, his armor has an insignia of a grinning skull and a great sword. The walls here have returned to grimy stone instead of the beautifully cared for wood found in other parts of the halls of death. To the south a large room can be seen.
A large darkly clad guard stands at attention here, his armor has an insignia of a grinning skull and a great sword. The walls here have returned to grimy stone instead of the beautifully cared for wood found in other parts of the halls of death. To the north a large room can be seen.
Strange arcane symbols are etched into a plaque on the door to the north, but apart from that it looks like an ordinary wooden door. The wall on the south has many ancient artifacts, some are weapons, some are pieces of armor, yet they are all untouchable behind a shimmering screen of energy. To the east is a long passageway leading to a large open room and to the west is the entrance room.
The stone walls in this little entranceway are covered in some blackish substance, almost like charcoal from a fire. To the north a dusty cluttered room can be seen and through the door to the south a passageway runs off to either side.
This small room is incredibly cluttered, various parts of alchemical apparatus litter the tables and the floor, books are strewn all over the place as well as loose papers. On a high shelf are reagents of every sort, from the classic eye of newt to a frightfully disturbing set of fetal limbs. There are a few cages hanging from the ceiling by heavy iron chains, and inside these cages are small winged creatures, chittering and clawing at nothing in particular while they constantly glance around them, as if incredibly paranoid. A huge book rests upon a stand in the center of room and is open to a page which is filled with heavy black writing in a beautiful flowing script. To the east a strange chanting can be heard and the exit lies to the south.
A great pentagram has been painted on the ground in some red substance and standing in the center is a great mage with arms reaching to the sky and chanting in the spidery language of magic. Huddled behind him are strange tortured creatures, perhaps past summoning mistakes, and they are all cringing in terror of the great mage. Lightning and energy begin crackling between his hands and a great wall of flame shoots up to envelop his body. The huddled creatures cringe in terror, perhaps anticipating what horrific creature will be summoned next.
Imbedded inside the wooden walls here are graves, humans, giants, elves are just a few of the races who lie in their final sleep within strange glass coffins and under each is a bronze plaque, each telling a name heard only in legend, as if this is where the heroes of the ages take their final sleep. To the east is a huge hall and to the west the passageway continues.
The size of this hall boggles the mind, its ceiling is barely visible and even that high up the detail put into the ceiling is astounding. The walls seem to be made of solid gold and absolutely no expense was spared in the carvings which cover every inch of the walls. All around the edges of the room typical courtiers can be seen, but unlike ones seen in other throne rooms, these seem to be moving slow, and none of them seem to be making conversation. At the east end of this area a great throne can be seen with a small dark figure resting upon it.
Just to the east now lies a great golden throne, in fact just about everything in this great throne room is made of gold, and because of this the dark man resting on the throne and the guards to his sides stand out incredibly. For some reason none of the numerous courtiers in this room go anywhere near the throne, perhaps by orders, or perhaps by simple common sense.
The detail in the throne itself is staggering and a closer look shows a repeating pattern carved into it creating a complex motif of flowing shades, grinning wraiths and screaming souls. Even though the figure sitting on the throne is small in size he gives off a feeling of power and authority, at his waist is a dangerous looking main gauche, and his body is clothed in dark leathers. On his head is a crown seemingly fashioned from a human skull. To his sides are two great guards, far bigger than he, clad in full plate armor bearing the insignia of the grinning skull and sword.
Darkly clad courtiers wander about aimlessly here, none of them seeming to notice the one who is huddled in the corner gibbering madly to himself. All of a sudden, the gibbering man gets a blank look on his face, shakes his head as if in denial of something, breathes a small sigh then gets to his feet and begins wandering like the rest of them. Off to the west is the exit from this great throne room and just to the south east is a great throne with a small dark figure resting upon it.
Strange courtiers mill about this part of the throne room not talking or interacting with anyone, just wandering. The walls are made of beautifully carved gold as is the ceiling which is barely visible due to its height. Further to the east a great throne can be seen with a small black figure resting upon it and the rest of the throne room is filled with the same strange courtiers.
Silent, hollow faced courtiers wander around aimlessly here seemingly oblivious to their beautiful surroundings and there are a few which just sit there and do nothing but stare. The room here is as beautiful as the rest of this magnificent throne room with intricately carved golden walls and a similarly made arched ceiling. To the north the hall leads back to the way out to other parts, and further on is a great throne.
The beautiful golden walls here have been darkened by a great banner depicting the standard of death, the great grinning skull and broadsword. A few of the courtiers stare blankly at the banner, even when bumped by others they do not move. Other figures such as these can be seen wandering all around this great hall and beyond, past the hall's heart, sits a great throne and upon it a small dark figure.
This is a very well kept passageway, not a speck of dust can be seen on the floor or on the walls. The way is lit with strange glowing balls attached to the walls, as if a cleric has created lights and fashioned clever fixtures on which to put them. Scattered along the stone walls are portraits of the four Lords of the Apocalypse, and a fifth unknown creature. The passageway leads to the north and footsteps can be heard in the distance.
Odd glowing balls attached to the wall light the way here and make a four way intersection visible to the north. Walking between the passageways to the north are hunched cowled figures, not paying any attention to each other, just going about their own business. To the south can be seen a fairly abrupt dead end.
This intersection leads to four seemingly different areas, to the south a dark stone walled passage is seen, to the east and west are wood paneled walls, and to the north is a passage dug out of hard rock twisting its way into the darkness. Walking to and from the north, east and west passages are strangely hunched figures covered in heavy grey robes, all silent and going about their own business.
A short stone passageway connects this holding area to the rest of this strange underground community. All around the walls of this fairly large room are cells of all sizes holding prisoners of all races and species. The strange thing about this prison is that the prisoners are all very well kept leading one to believe that these creatures are being held for a certain purpose.
The cells in this area of the room seem to contain mostly humanoids of all races, and none of them seem very worried about their current situation, in fact, most seem very content. There is no shortage of food in this jail, making most of the prisoners quite plump. Towards the southern side of this room some very large cells can be seen and off to the south eastern side of the room are quite a few tiny cells.
Somehow, the keepers of this underground world managed to capture and transport a small family of wyverns into this underground jail. Aside from the wyverns, other unusual creatures can be found in the adjoining cells such as ettins and treants. From here, a collection of small cells can be seen to the eastern edge of the room, and to the northern side a large collection of humanoids are penned up.
A small desk sits along the western wall of this cramped little office. A short corridor leading out to the west opens up into a well lit intersection where several cowled figures can be seen going about their business. At the desk sits an old grey haired elf scratching at a parchment with a long feathered quill. Piles of parchment, filled with a long and flowing script can be seen about the walls of the room, and a large stack of clean paper sits behind the elf.
Children of all races are locked behind bars along these walls, yet none of them are crying and most even seem to be having a good time playing with their little friends. A hunched figure walks up, unlocks one of the cells and removes an elven child. As the man carries the child away the other wave and say goodbye, as if they know they will never see the little elf again, yet, none seem upset or worried by this fact.
This passage leads steadily deeper into the rock and it is astounding to think of how much rock must have been moved to create this passage. To the south is a well lit four way intersection and this rock passage winds its way to the north. Occasionally hunched robed figures pass along silently.
The passageway veers to the east here and the light from the south is soon not going to be enough to light the way.
The passage continues to slope deeper and deeper into the rock, and who knows how deep it actually is. To the west a faint glow of light can be seen and to the east the darkness continues. Occasionally strange hunched figures pass by silently.
The deep dark rock passageway winds its way to the north here and back towards the west. A shuffling sound can be heard as it echoes throughout this passage and the source is the hunched robed figures which pass by.
This dark tunnel keeps twisting towards the west again and a larger robed figure passes by carrying a carcass of some sort. As the figure heads to the west, what looked like a carcass begins making a soft pathetic mewling sound as if it knows where the figure is taking it. Off in the distance echoes of pain filled howls can be heard.
Once again the tunnel twists to the north and the echoes of pain filled sounds are getting louder. The tunnel itself is beginning to get bigger as it heads towards the north and more figures can be seen off in the distance towards the north and the east.
As you begin to fall you feel all the forces of magic leave your body and a feeling of horror sets itself deep in your soul. You fall for what seems like an eternity, the wind rushing through your lungs tearing away your screams of terror. As your skull explodes upon the rocky ground darkness falls over your mind and you are no more.
The tunnel here is huge and it can be seen to open up into a large cavern to the east. Along the walls are scratches made from what have to be huge claws, and the creature who owns these claws must be gigantic indeed. Towards the south the tunnel shrinks to a more normal size and can also be seen to twist to the east.
The ceiling of the tunnel is now completely out of sight making this more of a great underground cavern than a tunnel. More of the figures can be found here, many of them carrying strange creatures in their arms, some which are squirming, trying to get free and some which just lie there as though they have given up hope of escaping their captors. All the figures which are carrying a creature head towards the east and any figures returning to this area are empty handed. The cavern stretches out to the east and to the west it shrinks back to a tunnel.
This area opens up into a large cavern to the east and slowly shrinks back to a regular tunnel to the west. Occasionally an odd robed figure walks by and to the east carrying some strange and subdued creature in his arms, and empty armed figures wander back towards the west.
This is the southwest corner of a great cavern and to the west a large tunnel leads back out of this area. Just to the east, and running the full width of the cavern is a huge chasm, with absolutely no bottom in sight and no obvious way across. Suddenly, a few of the robed figures walk in and hold the creatures they were carrying up above their heads and begin a type of chant. At the sound of their voices small winged imps flutter down from the ceiling, grab the offerings in their claws and ferry it over to the far side of the cavern. The robed figures, their job done, wander back towards the west.
This part of the cavern seems very unused, layers of dust cover the ground and even the thin air smells stale. To the east is a huge bottomless chasm with no visible way across, to the south, small winged imps can be seen flying over the chasm and there is also an exit to this cavern.
The air over the chasm is freezing, as if something in the dark depths is removing all the heat coming from the surrounding areas. Even from this vantage point, no end to the pit below can be found but thankfully there is solid ground to the east and west. To the south the pit continues to the south wall of the cavern.
This is the northeast corner of a large underground cavern, and to the west is a great gaping chasm. The hard stone floor is covered in dust as if no one has had any reason to be here for many years. For some reason to the south, wisps of mist can be seen from an eastern passage.
The air here drops in temperature by several degrees as if the thick mist to the east is draining the very energy from this end of the cavern. To the west is a great gaping chasm over which small imps are carrying over bodies of various types of creatures, when they reach this end a few robed figures walk in from the east and collect these offerings from the imps and return to the east with them in their arms.
The darkness from the chasm below seems to fill the entire area with gloom, and anything up here had best be imbued with the power of flight, or else they could suffer a horrible death somewhere down below. Far to the east a strange mist seems to cover the area for some reason and to the west is the way out of this cavern.
The mist filled passageway continues for a while until it suddenly opens up into a great underground chamber. Carved into the rock floor and walls are strange arcane symbols which glow with an unearthly light, and at each sacrifice that the robed figures make the glow gets slightly brighter. Their sacrifices are obviously being made to the huge scaled winged creature sitting in a black throne carved out of the very living rock, which grins as the life blood of the sacrifices spills across the floor. Its body is covered with heavy plates of natural armor and the glow from the walls nearer to it reach out and surround it with a nimbus of blue energy. It suddenly opens its gaping maw and lets out a huge bellow of what sounds to be laughter, and the strange mist pours out of its mouth filling the room. The only path of escape is back through the passage to the cavern to the west.
Suddenly there is no exit from this room, but considering what it is filled with, one could hardly care. This huge stone vault is filled with gold and jewels as far as the eye can see as well as strange artifacts and ancient weapons. Standing in the center of the room is a great golden circle which must be at least ten feet high and looking into the circle a faint image of a happy little town can be seen. The circle looks to be the only exit to this vault.
This ladder seems to go on forever, until suddenly there is a speck of light from far below. Since there is no turning back that light seems like the only safe exit.
You stand in an empty void, the only substantial thing apart from yourself is the dark stone roads leading in all possible directions, some even twisting in ways that seem impossible. As you look around your surroundings, an inexplicable hunger begins gnawing at your stomach and you know that you have to get out of here fast.
