Experience
In the game: help experience
Whenever you kill a monster, you earn experience points. When enough experience points are earned, you raise a level at once, wherever you are (no trip to your guildmaster). There is a cap on experience per kill determined by the group size. You can max out on a creature, see: MAXING.
New characters earn more: triple experience up to level 5, double up to level 10, then a little less each level until level 15, where the bonus ends. The message for each kill gives what you actually receive, and why (for example "You receive 360 experience (×3 newcomer bonus)."). A multi-class character's experience is split between their classes, and the message says so too.
Exploring pays as well: the first time any character of your account enters a zone none of them has been in, that character gains a hundredth of a level's experience (of their highest class). Later characters of the account get nothing there. There is none for the town you start in, and none at level 50.
Using your skills and spells pays too: each that works gives 100 experience for every level of the skill (the level your class learns it at). In a fight that is always paid in full. Out of a fight it comes from your practice pool, a tenth of your level's experience: once it is spent, practice gives nothing more ("You've learned all you can from practice for now") until it fills again. It fills back evenly over an hour, logged in or not, and never past full; a new level keeps it as full as it was.
